New Year, Old Clothes
I set myself a little goal of buying less clothes in 2021. Starting from January I added to a note every time I bought an item. It’s significantly longer than I was hoping for but we live and we learn!
Going into another year, I’m going to do the same, and hopefully this time round it will be significantly smaller. There are questions I like to ask myself before purchasing something…
Taking a moment before purchasing an item and asking yourself these questions can help reduce impulse buying:
-How many times am I likely to wear it?
-Do I already own something similar?
-Can I find it or something similar secondhand? (Charity shop/friends)
-Is it from a brand I want to support?
-What is the quality like?
-Is it an occasion piece, if yes could I borrow something instead?
If unsure add to a wish list and come back to it in a few weeks. If you still want it after this time then you know you’re more likely to use it.
I make some allowances, and this year included some of these. Underwear and sportswear I’m personally less inclined to buy secondhand. As a runner it was time I needed some new sportswear and I hate to admit I went with the “convenience” options. The Berghaus coat was bought as a replacement for my *very* old waterproof (which I have had since 2008, and is no longer waterproof) so I intend on this being an investment piece I will have for many years to come.
Here’s to less new clothes, preloved clothes, and re-loving our old clothes.
